World Water Day

World Water Day

"Good food, good life" is a promise we make to billions of consumers around the world.

To fulfill this promise, we ensure that our products and services are of high quality and safe.

We also undertake to use water resources in our company as efficiently as possible.

The report prepared by the 2030 Water Group indicates that the amount of water consumed by industry, agriculture and communities in the world in 2030 will be 40% higher than current resources.

As the world's largest food and beverage company, we can make a significant contribution to solving this problem not only in our factories, but also in the company's supply chains and other locations.

Every innovation is a step towards a sustainable future for our business and the communities we operate in and is part of creating common values.

We are aware that saving water is our duty. We have defined ten ways to do this.

  1. Water recycling and reuse.

Sewage at our coffee factory in Vietnam is filtered and reused at the plant. In 2015, we recycled or reused 7.7 million cubic meters of water at all sites. This accounts for 5.5% of our total global water consumption.

  1. Reduction of the amount of water consumed in the production of one tonne of the product.

Today, the amount of water used to produce one tonne of the product is 41% less than a decade ago. As a result of 362 water saving projects, our plants are planning to save another 1.7 million cubic metres of water per year.

  1. Introduction of new methods and technologies.

In Vietnam, we have taught coffee farmers touse low-tech irrigationtechniques to manage and record the amount of water used to irrigate yields. We also work with local scientists on a short-term weather forecasting model, updating the weather forecast for farmers every six hours.

  1. Use of new technologies for cooling in factories.

The introduction of the new dry cooling system at our milk factory in the Azores means that we no longer have to use large amounts of sea water to cool down the equipment used to make milk powder. The water savings last year were equivalent to the amount needed to fill more than 240 pools measuring the sizes of olympic swimming pools.

  1. Work with partners to promote water management.

Our plant in The Indian State of Karnataka is working with the local government and farmers on pilot projects for rice and cane producers to help use more efficient techniques to grow these water-intensive crops. Joint Community Action can help ensure sustainable water use.

  1. Establishment of a plant without water consumption in California.

We carry out a transformation of our dairy plant in Modesto, California, so that we can use all the water obtained from the treated milk and then recycle it. By the end of 2016, we will have saved 98 000 cubic metres of water per year.

  1. Helping farmers to supply water.

In Panama, we helped dairy farms set up spring water collection points. This means that farmers can keep cows and calves in better physical condition during the long drought period. As a result, the wipeout has increased by 10%.

  1. Ensuring clean water and sanitary conditions.

Almost 230 000 people in Côte d'Ivoire's cocoa-growing regions have been given better access to clean water. They are also provided with sanitary and hygienic conditions thanks to our cooperation with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies(IFRC). We have been cooperating with IFRC since 2002, and in 2014 we renewed cooperation for another five years.

  1. Improving water access and sanitary conditions.

In Pakistan, near its factories, Nestlé has set up seven drinking water abstraction munitions. On a global scale, as signatories to the WASH pledge, we have ensured that every employee of Nestlé has access to clean water and standard sanitary and hygienic conditions in the workplace.

  1. Educating the new generation.

In Argentina, our local bottled water brand Eco de los Andes raises awareness of water conservation in schools as part of its green ribbon program. Throughout the year, Nestlé Waters staff voluntarily visit schools to provide teachers with support in lessons on environmental sustainability.
