Nestle puts forward nature-based solutions as part of New York Climate Week 2020

Halting the progress of climate change is an urgent task that requires collective action from businesses, governments, academic institutions, non-profit organisations and individuals. Nestlé is therefore happy to participate in New York Climate Week, the largest international climate summit to showcase climate developments.

Mark Schneider, ceo of Nestlé, spoke at the Walmart Sustainability Summit, part of the Climate Week Live Center, about the company's ambitions to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Nestlé's global strategy includes: redes up the portfolio to introduce more products that are better for us, better for the planet; 100% renewable electricity generation and increasing nature-based solutions that prevent carbon in our supply chain.

Reforestation and protection is one of nestlé's use of nature in the fight against climate change. As part of a broader global initiative to restore forests, the company recently announced a 4 million Swiss franc investment in the RELeafproject to plant three million trees in Malaysia over the next three years. Earlier this year, the company revealed its goal of planting three million trees at key mining sites in America and worked with the Ivory Coast government to protect and restore the Cavali Forest Reserve. These initiatives will help strengthen Nestlé's supply chain by making it more resilient.

Slowing the pace of climate change is a complex problem that will require large-scale collective action to achieve sustainable results. Nestlé and Walmart are among 17 companies stepping up measures to build a positive forest future. Recently, as part of Climate Week 2020, the Consumer Goods Forum launched the Forest Positive Action Coalition. The signatories will work together and use their common voice to accelerate systemic efforts to abolish deforestation, forest degradation and the move away from the main supply chains for palm oil, soy, paper, pulp and fibre packaging goods, and to promote transformative change across the sector.

As a supplier to Walmart, Nestlé will report on the progress of reforestation through Project Gigaton, contributing to the retailer's efforts to remove one billion metric tonnes (gigatons) of greenhouse gas emissions from the global value chain by 2030. In 2019, through the forest pillar of Project Gigaton, Walmart suppliers reportedly avoided more than 20 million metric tons of CO2.
