Alliance for YOUth study: Young people looking for job opportunities on Facebook

Alliance for Youth

Young people in the Baltic States are actively looking for job opportunities through popular social networks. The study 'Twiployment 4 Youth', initiated by the Alliance for YOUth, a European employers' initiative, shows this trend.

This study was initiated by Nestlé Baltic, a partner of Alliance for YOUth, and the research was carried out by another partner of the initiative, Nielsen. During the study, 500 young people (18–29 years of age) were interviewed in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

The results of "Twiployment 4 Youth" show that in Lithuania and Latvia almost one in two, while in Estonia , one in four young people are looking for a job. Not only young people who are unemployed, but also a large proportion of working young people are looking for work.

It became clear that the web is the main job search channel and young people use various job search opportunities – looking for job advertisements on specialized career portals, company websites, asking friends for advice.

Most young people also mention social networks as an important job search channel. For example, Facebook uses up to 80\u201290% of young Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians to find a job. The smallest share of those surveyed use Linkedin, Google+ and Twitter.

Corporate social media profiles have a lot of important information about the company – from operating, working culture and traditions to other people's suggestions or feedback about the company.

Social networks are useful in finding a job, because you can learn about the company from other people's comments and suggestions. In addition, there is a lot of useful information about the potential workplace in company profiles. Youth representatives also stressed that the use of social networks is a modern and innovative way of searching for work that represents the values of modern youth.

Alliance for YOUth is a Nestlé initiative that brings together the largest companies in Europe, which recognises that youth unemployment is a major social and economic problem on the continent and is ready to help tackle this problem. Its aim is to help young people enter the labour market.
